The project team studied Rubens’s A Landscape with a Shepherd and his Flock, c. 1638, at The National Gallery on Tuesday 16th September with Bart Cornelis, Curator of Dutch and Flemish Paintings, 1600 to 1800, and Hayley Tomlison, paintings conservator. Nestled amongst the horsehair that had been glued to the reverse of the panel was the panel maker’s punch of Michiel Vriendt (d.1637). For more about Vriendt, see the panel makers section of the website.  A Guild of Saint Luke Antwerp brand mark was not visible but may be hidden under the horse hair or the lint that covers the join of the two planks.
